Salt the Student Parking Lot!

The student parking lot is used by the students every day. There is a slight problem in the winter though. The lot is covered in ice, and that is a major problem. So the parking lot needs to be salted regularly for various reasons: students can fall on the ice and be late to school, they can get injured, and the cars can slide on the ice and run into each other, ect.  It is the school’s responsibility to make sure that this problem is taken care of. Although it is the students own risk to drive to school and park in the lot, the school should make sure that it is safe for the student’s because it is the school’s property. There are often many people that are seen falling on the ice everyday. What if one day, there is a student walking and a car is coming and it can’t stop. The student could be hit and injured which could lead to a possible law suit against the school for not having the lot up to safety standards. It is a privilege to have the lot available for the students to use and to be able to drive to school, but what is the point of having this privilege when students could be hurt. This is why the lot needs to be salted on a regular basis. If this is a problem then is there even a reason that the lot should be in use? Is it really worth the injured students if the school can not make sure that the lot is safe for student use? Also, if a student slips and because of that they walk into the building late, they still get in trouble. It is not their fault and that is unfair to them. There are times where they allow extra time during inclement weather.

Senior Sara Jurgens said, “I really like the fact that we have a place for the students to be able to put their cars but I feel like it needs to be better taken care of in the winter. I pick up a friend everyday and they have already fallen about 5 times on the ice.”

Casie Griffis is a junior at Chardon and her response was, “My car usually has really good brakes but the other day when I was trying to park in the student parking lot my car started to slide a little even when I had my brakes pressed all the way.”

Senior Holly Golden says, “It is really hard to see when the ice pockets are in the morning when trying to park and walk through the parking lot but if we knew that there was enough salt on the ground we wouldn’t have to worry about it.” The parking lot is a great privilege but it needs to be salted and taken care of regularly or else injuries and accidents could occur.
