Where can you glow under the black lights, get Chill Blasted with refreshing mist, and dance for hours? The Chardon High School Winter dance, of course! This year, Student Council will be hosting a black light dance on Saturday, February 1st from 7 to 11 P.M. The same DJ from Zone Entertainment who worked it last year will mix some hits in the gym. Tickets will be sold at lunch periods 4-8 from Tuesday, January 28th through Friday, January 31st for 10 dollars each. Chardon’s students are extremely excited to see the return of the dance, but there are mixed opinions. Junior Ashley Konya stated, “I loved the backlights and cool air jets. The only thing I could complain about is the DJ talking a little too much; I want to dance, not listen to a radio talk show!” Senior Vaughn Loudermilk commented, “The dance is something new. Its relationship to Homecoming is that they are both dances, and that’s about it. I think the winter dance is the best all year, and I will be there this year for sure!” Junior Kayla Seman reflected on the dance, “The lights and music was fantastic, but the DJ remixed the songs a little too much to my taste. Nonetheless, this was the best dance yet!” Finally, senior Megan Whitney has advice for students skeptical about going. She says that students should go to the dance because it is cheaper, more fun, has better music, and is more of an informal dance, like a party, so you won’t need to make plans.

Leading up to the dance, there will be a spirit week. Monday will be the Notorious Roll out of Bed Day, Tuesday is Opposite Day, Wednesday is “dress-like-a-fictional-character-day”, Thursday is Beach Day (yes, Beach day in the winter), and Friday is going to be the Class Colors day. Voting for a girl and boy Captain of Crazy for each class will take place in a homeroom on January 21. Due to the destruction of decorations between classes last year, students are not permitted to decorate their entire hallways. Instead, the doors of classrooms in each hallway will be beautified with the according class’s spirit. Students are not happy with this, however. Sophomore Brodie Hamlin said, “If the administration is afraid of destruction of decorations, they need to watch the cameras to see who is doing it!” Another sophomore, Chloe Tegal, added, “Without the whole hallways decorated, the week won’t be as fun. This shouldn’t be a problem in the first place.” Another change is the Captain of Crazy assembly. It will now be cut 30 minutes, and will therefore not include the relay races. Regardless, the spirit meter will return, and with it, the annual class cheer off. The assembly will also hold the floor for representatives of school extracurriculars. Sports, clubs, and the arts will each provide a school update on their recent and upcoming events.

Ultimately, the four graduating classes will be judged on their participation for spirit days, their door decorations, and their volume while cheering for the spirit meter. So don’t forget to wear your neon and white, grab some friends, and come to the shin dig, as well as the dance!
