“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!”

“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!”

Brace yourselves, because the National Honor Society Dodgeball Tournament is soon upon us! On Tuesday, October 22nd, various teams of six will battle it out in the gym for dodgeball glory. However, these teams won’t look like any regular dodgeballers—they will also be outfitted in wacky Halloween costumes. There will be two to three dodgeball games going at once. To watch this exciting spectacle, you must pay two dollars at the door. Last year, NHS raised approximately $300 for Geauga’s RescueVillage.

The proceeds from spectators, as well as the $30 sign up fee for each dodgeball team, will all benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. This charity supports any servicemen who have been injured in the line of combat anytime on or after September 11, 2001. Their transition back to life in the United States is often challenging and expensive, and the Wounded Warriors Project looks to aid these veterans with various programs and services. Proceeds from this charity also go towards meeting the wounded veterans’ needs, whether they happen to be a car or a steady job.

NHS has organized this event, with numerous volunteers setting up, publicizing, selling concessions, and refereeing the game. Pizza, candy, Gatorade, and water will be sold at the event. A new feature of this tournament will be new dodgeballs, which will be about the size of a volleyball or size four soccer ball. They will be heavier than the balls used in years past, but not enough to seriously hurt any participants.

This year brings surprising news of a faculty team consisting of Mr. Long, Mr. Fronk, Mr. Hewitt, Mr. Bartley, Mr. Leikala, and Mr. Murawski. When asked about who he thinks will win, Mr. Brown confidently replies, “The teacher team. Even though they are not as fast, they have skill and experience.”

Junior Rachel Tusick, of the “Doritos Locos Tacos” team excitedly boasts, “We’re ready to win, and we plan on beating everyone this year. We had a rough game last year, but don’t count us out.”

Update: The team of teachers, “Players Past Their Prime”, managed to win the tournament, despite impressive efforts from the various student teams.
