Pompeii

Pompeii, released February 2014 to theaters, is a fantastic movie set in 79 A.D about Milo (Kit Harington). He is a slave orphaned by Romans who slaughtered his family, and  he later becomes a gladiator. Keeping always with him his remembrance of the past, Milo becomes an amazing fighter. He is thrown in with other gladiators to travel the lands fighting for other people’s amusement. On the way to Pompeii, Milo and the other “savages” walk with princess Cassiare (Emily Browning), who is returning to Pompeii because she is unwillingly betrothed to a Roman of high rank. He identifies with the very people who killed Milo’s family. When a horse falls down and has to be put out of its misery, the two star-crossed lovers have their first encounter. Their second encounter, trying to run away on a horse together, fails and puts Milo at the top of the list to be put into the arena.  After receiving numerous lashes, he and his gladiator brethren must fight to the death to keep themselves alive. Mid -fight, Mount Vesuvius erupts, and Milo must fight for his life and save his princess before it’s too late.   Those who saw this movie have positive reviews:

“It was such a good movie with really awesome graphics. I love the ending-it is not like normal movie endings, ” and, “Is it wrong that I wanted the volcano to win?”~Brittany Farley high school senior

“I love the volcano and the eruption was amazing!”~Thea Boyle

Ryan Watts, a junior stated, “Even though I haven’t seen it I would love to, just to watch the ending when people’s lives are in danger”.

Overall with its unconventional ending and the romance interwoven in this historic tale of a natural disaster, this movie was a very satisfying watch. With the  time put into the sound and graphics, and the  connections between fire and water destroying  Pompeii, I’m very surprised it’s not more popular. This is a movie worth watching!
