Equipped with an incredible mind, and possessing a goofy and sharp personality, Cody Bezik emerges on top of it all when the word ‘scholarship’ comes to mind. Cody Thomas Bezik was born on July 22, 1992 and raised in Chardon by his loving parents Tom and Marilyn. He attended St. Mary School from kindergarten to eighth grade and then took his academic talents up north to Chardon High School.

“Cody is pretty awesome; he is nerd-tastic,” said senior Vanessa Toth. Throughout high school Bezik has been actively involved with Academic Decathlon (AcaDec). AcaDec is a club where teams from different schools and of different grade levels (the levels include A, B, and C) compete in academic competitions covering many subjects. The subjects include: art, music, social studies, science, essay, speech, interview, super quiz, language and literature, and economics. Bezik has excelled in this club, winning many medals. During the two State competitions, Bezik won a gold medal in essay and super quiz, a silver medal in geology, and a bronze medal in social science. At both Regional competitions, Bezik won a gold medal in science, social studies and super quiz, two silver medals in essay, and a bronze medal in math.  “Cody is an interesting person,” said Mrs. Grantham, the AcaDec Club leader. “Even though I’ve never had him in class, I know he is incredibly intelligent, yet goofy at the same time, and a very creative thinker. I will never forget when he was voted Captain of Crazy his junior year. He also professed his love for WWE wrestling and he wrote two AcaDec speeches on wrestling that I had to listen to; it was a lot of fun. Also, in AcaDec, he leads the team in score and has a very large drive to compete.”

“Cody had a wonderful attitude in class,” said Mrs. Rohr, Cody’s chemistry teacher. “He truly wanted to fully understand every topic and then delve into it in greater detail than our book, a college text, addressed.” Even though Bezik does well in all of his subjects, his favorite is easily said to be chemistry. It is a subject in which he applies himself to the most, craving more and more knowledge on the subject. “His intensity of concentration was remarkable,” Mrs. Rohr said.  “He is on his way to becoming a professional chemical engineer. He is very self-motivated in learning science, and demonstrates great intellectual curiosity. He is a real scholar!”

Despite Bezik’s love for science, he also excels in English. “Cody was a student in my Honors English IV class during his junior year,” said English teacher Mr. Synder. “Although he is more of a math/science person, Cody is also an excellent English student. He has the innate ability to analyze literature, and he is a highly skilled writer as well.” Bezik’s skill in English comes from his love for reading. Fantasy and Science-Fiction books are his favorite books to read in his spare time, and he can easily read one a day. “Cody was a pleasure to have in class, and I always looked forward to reading his work and hearing him speak.” In a closing statement, Mr. Snyder said, “I foresee Cody’s life path leading him either to a cure for cancer or to overtake Vince McMahon as CEO of WWE, Inc.”

Bezik’s renowned love for WWE wrestling has helped him succeed in Acadec. He has written two competitive speeches on wrestling. Although he received no medals for them, he was given good scores. “His love for wrestling is funny”, Vanessa Toth said. “Even though it helped him out academically, hearing him talk about it never gets old.”

During Bezik’s high school career, he has taken advantage of every difficult class he possibly could in order to gain absolute knowledge. His junior year was not easy one, consisting of honors classes such as: chemistry, English and pre-calculus, as well as zero period AP U.S. History. He also did a fine job of packing his senior year with difficult AP classes such as chemistry, physics, calculus, English literature and government. “He was an excellent student,” said Mr. Ciferno, Bezik’s AP physics teacher. “He’s just what an AP student should be. He is very serious about his work, and he has an outstanding work ethic. He also always had a goal of getting a five on the AP test.”

Aside from the academic portion, Bezik is also a great friend and always willing to help anyone out who needs it; ranging from academic to personal advice. “Cody’s a great source of advice, and definitely a good friend to have,” senior Dan Brown said. “I feel that Cody is unappreciated for what he does for people and how he helps them out.”

Senior Louie Seiler said, “Cody’s pretty cool. He’s got an amazing sense of humor. He’s always willing to help out if you don’t get something, and he’s the best person to ask because there’s nothing he usually doesn’t get.”

After Cody Bezik graduates, he plans on taking his talents to Case Western Reserve University, where he will major in Chemical Engineering. He will never be forgotten by his friends nor teachers, for his ability and desire to learn. As a closing statement, Mrs. Grantham, Cody’s AcaDec coach said, “My wish for him is to ‘stay true to yourself. It has served you well thus far.”
