On Thursday, November 6, it’s opening night for the CHS drama department’s performance of the classic play, Arsenic and Old Lace. With Jeremy Bolton as the lead male, Mortimer Brewster, and Kaitlyn Carr and Brittney Wilson cast as the female leads, Martha and Abby Brewster, it’s sure to be a show of success! The murder-mystery is set in 1941.

The plays centers around the Brewster family, a bunch of insane, homicidal maniacs. Mortimer is trying to keep his elderly aunts safe, while trying to maintain his own sanity.

“I like that they’re all secretly crazy; it puts a twist on the whole thing and it’s really unexpected.” says Emma Greenwood, understudy to Kaitlyn.

The show opens in less than two weeks- November 6th, running through the 9th. Emma says that “the stage directions are rough for now, but they’ll be ready soon”. The fourteen person cast is “really talented, and  I’m very lucky to get to work with them.” says Emma Jackson, understudy for Brittney Wilson.

The fourteen person cast is definitely a decrease in roles in comparison to previous shows. Cast production assistant Megan Kofol says of working with a smaller cast, “Although the small cast does not necessarily make the production better or worse, I have noticed in my particular role that it is a lot easier to organize tasks to be done.”

Brittney says of the others involved in the show, “It’s a fun cast. I think we’re all ready, and that the crew members are ready. We’re gonna kill it!”. And Shalom Decipeda,  on stage crew, says, “It’s fun and it’s a lot of work, especially since it takes a lot of story building.”

The rest of the school is buzzing about the show, too! Senior Sarah Adams says, “I am looking forward to the school play. I don’t know what Arsenic and Old Lace is about, but I can’t wait to find out.” Elizabeth Duncan, a freshman, says, “It seems really interesting, really cool. All of my friends are in drama, and I can’t wait to watch them perform.” The school is buzzing about the dark comedy. Sophomore Michael Tosti, also a part of the sound crew, says of the show, “It fixates on the way that we can still laugh at events that most would say are not funny in any way. It’s a playful romp through the darker side of a person’s psyche.”

The show will be at Park Auditorium on Chardon Square, and tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Senior Citizens are invited to come and see it for free on Wednesday, the 5th at 7:00 PM. Also, the Friday performance has been cancelled due to the playoff game. Show dates are November 6th and 8th, at 7:00 PM, and November 9th.
